Welcome to Heather Unplugged

Heather straight to your inbox

I'm excited to announce the launch of Heather Unplugged—something that's been bouncing around in my head for a while, and I'm finally bringing it to life. With over 11 years in the biz, I've got plenty to share about UX, product design, art, and technology.

“But Heather,“ you might say, “there’s already an incredibly saturated market out there for UX and design content… what makes yours different?”

I see a lot of UX content out there featuring perfectly polished case studies while glossing over the gritty, everyday challenges that make up most of the job. I see 10,000 foot content that doesn’t help you apply it to your own situation. I see article after article talking about the Death of UXwhen in reality the field is just changing (as many do decade after decade).

About a year ago, I made the jump from an individual contributor (IC) to Product Design Manager. While its easy to find information on the best way to set up Components in your Figma files, its surprisingly difficult to find content discussing the realities of design leadership, especially at companies with less than 500 people. I hope that by sharing some of my experiences being in the trenches and building a design practice at smaller start ups, I can provide the perspective I wish I had at the time. I’m writing this content for me. I’m not writing for the SEO machine or to get the most clicks... Just my experiences, straight to you.

Now a little about me:

I currently serve as the Head of Product Design at Kajabi, working alongside my team of 10 fantastic product designers. We create tools that empower creators to become entrepreneurs by offering online courses, coaching, podcasts, community support, and we're constantly adding more ways for entrepreneurs to succeed. Prior to Kajabi, I've worked with startups of fewer than ten people, online marketplaces like Carvana and Weedmaps, and designed for the NFL Mobile app and the video streaming platform GamePass.

Throughout my time at Kajabi, I’ve been inspired by witnessing creators and experts share what their passions with the world. I‘m proud to start sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly with all of you. Stay tuned!
